The globalization of science, technology, and the world economy continues to advance in the 21st century. In Japan the political issues of achieving greater internationalization and the development of business enterprises abroad require leaders in a variety of fields that are able to operate on a global scale.
The Academy for Global Leadership(AGL) is an academy that lays the foundation of the scientific and technological expertise of the Tokyo Institute of Technology and brings together the resources of all the university's departments in order to train future global leaders. The academy was established in April 2011, and was designated as a"Program for Leading Graduate Schools" in the following year by MEXT. Its main purpose is to train individuals, chosen from the entire range of post-graduate programs, to widen their expertise in their chosen fields in order to contribute to the development of other areas of Science and Engineering. Through the program, they deepen their understanding of Japanese culture and world cultures, study technology management, and improve interpersonal skills for the purpose of becoming outstanding global leaders.
In addition to the standard course material in their own majors programs, AGL offers a program for students to develop practical skills through the Dojo Programs and Off-Campus Program. Mentors and career advisers are assigned to provide extensive, ongoing support to AGL graduates.
AGL trains students to become future global leaders who are active in a variety of fields. The program lays the foundation of the scientific and technological expertise of the Tokyo Institute of Technology and brings together the resources of all the university's departments. As of 2013, in conjunction with Hitotsubashi University, a new program was introduced and the academic milieu was further improved to enable students to develop their abilities of the highest order.
The Dojo Programs includes Dojo for a Science and Engineering and Dojo for a Management and Society. Through the dojos, students participate in debates and group work with fellow students that have diverse academic backgrounds. A new dojo was opened in 2013 in conjunction with Hitotsubashi University and another dojo is scheduled to be opened in Autumn.
AGL students have the opportunity to test their academic knowledge and expertise and leadership skills in real world situations through internships with businesses and research institutes in both Japan and abroad. Internship are determined by students themselves after the discussions with coordinators.
A unique characteristic of AGL is that students enrolled in the curriculum are exempt from tuition. (However, financial aid is not available to students who study beyond the standard course length.) AGL students are also eligible to receive subsidies for research expenses when they apply and are accepted.

Extensive system of career support is provided to graduates of AGL program in order to help students make the transition to their professional lives. In the Dojo Programs, a mentor is provided from the student's dojo who is available to discuss any problems or issues.
