Screening Camp for Enrollment in the Academy for Global Leadership held

On October3, 2011, the Academy for Global Leadership held its Fiscal 2011 Enrollment Ceremony for the Tokyo Institute of Technology Academy for Global Leadership.


It was a fine autumn day, appropriate for making a new start. President Sato handed an enrollment permission slip to each of the nine inaugural students, with the faculty members in attendance.


President Iga of the Tokyo Institute of Technology explained the background to the establishment of the Academy for Global Leadership, and expressed the strong commitment of Tokyo Tech to develop global leaders who will take charge of the future of Japan. He encouraged the students as he said, "Leaders of the global community must deeply understand the cultures of countries around the world. 'Do' (or way) is one of Japan's original cultures, and there is a spirit in Do. I want you to develop your spirit in 'Dojo' to become real global leaders." Meanwhile, Academy President Satoh expressed his determination, saying, "You have infinite possibilities. Please keep your current hopes and expectations up, and work hard to achieve them. The Academy for Global Leadership will support you to the utmost." He concluded his speech with the following inspiring words: "Fly to the open sky with ambition!"

Lastly, Visiting Professor Akira Terasaki, who, after completing the physical electronics course at the Graduate School of Science and Engineering of Tokyo Tech, went on to hold a number of prominent positions, such as Vice Minister for Policy Coordination at Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and made efforts to enhance the international competitiveness of Japan's ICT industry, also delivered a strong message: "Why is globalization required today? Without leaders who can create innovation and think by themselves, there will be no future for Japan. I place high hopes on you all."

The students seemed to reaffirm their strong determination. At the orientation session following the ceremony, they finally smiled reunited with fellow students from the screening camp. The next day, they started training in the dojo. The Academy for Global Leadership will launch activities that satisfy their and others' expectations.
